Leftover pasta safety
Cool, refrigerate and reheat leftover pasta safely, with clear warning signs and special guidance for chicken, seafood and pasta salad.
Cool leftovers promptly in shallow containers, refrigerate at 4°C or colder and use most pasta within 3–4 days. Seafood and older leftover meat shorten that window.
Cooked pasta can support bacterial growth when held warm for too long. Smell is not a complete safety test because some hazards give no warning.
The storage clock belongs to the oldest cooked ingredient. Turning yesterday's chicken into pasta does not restart it.
Cool quickly
Divide large quantities into shallow containers and refrigerate promptly. Do not leave a deep bake on the counter for the evening.
Reheat thoroughly
Heat only the portion required until steaming throughout. Stir microwaved food so cold pockets do not remain.
Discard when uncertain
Visible mould, slime, sour odour, a swollen container or unknown storage time means the food goes out.
