How long does cooked pasta last?
Store cooked pasta and sauced leftovers safely, with practical fridge timelines and signs that dinner should go in the bin.
Most cooked pasta keeps for 3–4 days in a cold fridge. Dishes with cooked seafood are best used within 2 days, while leftover chicken timing starts on its original cooking day.
A date is more useful than a sniff test. Label leftovers when they enter the fridge, especially when cooked meat was already left over from another meal.
Cool food promptly in shallow containers and keep the fridge at 4°C or colder.
Sauce changes the useful window
Plain pasta and tomato sauce are generally robust. Seafood and fragile cream sauces deserve shorter storage and careful reheating.
When to throw it away
Visible mould, sour smells, slime or a swollen container are clear warnings. When storage time is uncertain, replacing a portion of pasta is cheaper than gambling with it.
| Cooked dish | Fridge guide |
|---|---|
| Plain pasta | 3–4 days |
| Tomato or meat sauce pasta | 3–4 days |
| Chicken pasta | Up to 3 days from cooking |
| Seafood pasta | 1–2 days |
| Pasta salad | 2–3 days |
Keep in mind
- Use shallow containers for faster cooling.
- Reheat only the portion you need.
