How to reheat pasta without drying it out
Reheat sauced pasta, baked pasta and plain cooked pasta safely, with the best pan, oven and microwave methods.
Add a small splash of water, cover where useful and heat gently until steaming hot. The best method depends on whether the pasta is creamy, tomato-based or baked.
Leftover pasta has already absorbed sauce and will take up more as it sits. Reheating therefore needs moisture and moderate heat.
Cream sauces need the gentlest treatment. Bakes need cover first, then a short uncovered finish for the crust.
Choose the method by sauce
Use a pan for most sauced pasta, the oven for larger bakes and a microwave for single portions. Stir microwave portions halfway through so the centre heats evenly.
Food safety still matters
Cool leftovers promptly, refrigerate and reheat only what you plan to eat. Heat until steaming throughout, especially dishes containing chicken or fish.
| Pasta type | Best method |
|---|---|
| Tomato sauce | Covered pan with water |
| Cream sauce | Low pan heat with milk or water |
| Pasta bake | Covered 180°C oven, then uncover |
| Plain pasta | Brief dip in boiling water or pan |
Keep in mind
- A tablespoon of water is often enough for one portion.
- Do not boil creamy leftovers aggressively.
