How much does dry pasta weigh when cooked?
See how much dried pasta weighs after cooking, why shapes absorb different amounts and how to plan cooked pasta for salads and meal prep.
Most dried pasta ends up around 2 to 2.5 times its dry weight. A 100 g dry portion usually becomes roughly 200–250 g cooked.
Pasta gains weight by absorbing water, not by creating more food. The exact increase changes with shape, brand and how far it is cooked.
For serving, dry weight is the more useful measure. Cooked weight matters mainly for meal prep or nutrition tracking.
Why the range is broad
Thin shapes cook quickly and may absorb less water than thick tubes. Very soft pasta also weighs more than firm al dente pasta because it has taken on more water.
Measure your regular brand
If precise cooked portions matter, weigh one normal dry serving, cook it as usual and weigh it after draining. That kitchen-specific ratio will be more useful than a universal promise.
| Dry pasta | Typical cooked range |
|---|---|
| 50 g | 100–125 g |
| 80 g | 160–200 g |
| 100 g | 200–250 g |
| 500 g | 1–1.25 kg |
Keep in mind
- Drain consistently before weighing.
- Do not use cooked weight to decide how much dry pasta to buy.
